Building on more of 15 years of continuous scientific research in the area of cocoa, and cocoa flavanols, Mars, Incorporated is committed to comprehensive , rigorous, and innovative science, which encompasses the mapping the cocoa genome; advancement of flavanol chemistry and analytics; development of flavanol-preserving food processing technologies; clinical dietary interventions in humans to understand the biomedical properties of flavanols; and medical-anthropological and population health-centered research programs. In collaboration with our partners and an international team of leading scientists and academic institutions, MARS published more than 130 peer-reviewed scientific papers, as well as some 30 patents. In addition, Mars has decades of research and development in the areas of cocoa sustainability, cocoa breeding and optimal cocoa farming techniques, and more recently, has published extensive research on the history of cocoa.

The Lipton Institute of Tea is Unilever’s dedicated tea research facility, headquartered at Sharnbrook, just outside London in the UK. It is entirely Unilever funded, and works with both its own in-house experts and external tea researchers to uncover new physical and mental health properties pertaining to tea. The world’s most northerly tea ‘plantation’ is operated from its Sharnbrook headquarters. This facility enables tea to be studied in a controlled environment, as representative samples of tea from around the world are grown.
